This is one of the more distressing statements found in the Bible. It seems to imply that the rich will grow richer and the poor poorer, and that that is the will of Spirit.

On the other hand, it is a very clear truth that shines with truth: when the kingdom is entered, or illumination bestowed, the things of the Earth are returned, made whole and luminous.

However, when enlightenment is lacking, the world of things is ever lacking. Everything is tainted with death, falsehood and pain. No pleasure of joy is pure because behind it waits the specter of loss.

When God removes what is there, it is out of Love, though it is scary and painful at times.

Only when everything that might support you is taken away do you really and truly fall into God’s hands. When your strength fails, you experience the infinite Strength.

So, to the one who has not — meaning, has not awakened — truly everything will be taken away.

Every support will wash away, every mental and emotional and physical structure will fail.

We could add an encouraging follow up to Matthew’s statement: “To the one from whom all is taken, everything is restored.”
